Implement an Employee
Monitoring Policy
So
now that you want to monitor your employees how are you going to implement your
new employee monitoring policy?
Check out some suggestions below.
Make sure employees...
- Completely understand what will be monitored and what will not. Your
best bet is to create an informative flier or brochure for them to read over.
This makes sure that they were notified of all policies if they choose to read
them over or not. You can even make this available online for
distribution to them.
- Know that you may or may not check logs on a regular basis. Some
companies choose to only monitor those employees who are suspected of abuse.
Others monitor everyone for abuse. Its your policy and make it clear to
the employees how you will be implementing it.
Employees Should Know Better
By making your policy clear your employees cannot claim ignorance. They
are hired for a specific duty and to create value to the company or institution.
Make sure they realize the computer is for company use only as with everything
else - fax machine, phone, copy machine, etc.
Policy Do's and Do Not's
- Be specific as you can be.
- If you say you are doing it - then do it!
- Policy goes for everyone - not just a few.
- Company reserves the right to monitor.
- When monitoring will be performed.
- What is monitored - in DETAIL!
- Information that is collected and stored.
- Consequences for abuse found.
- Previsions that allow for updates to your policy. This is essential
if you wish to change your policy at anytime.
